HIV/AIDS Awareness & Prevention Project
In collaboration with Gilead, we launched an HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention project in the Kalangala District. Located in Lake Victoria, Kalangala is known for its tropical beaches and biodiversity, but also for high HIV infection rates, particularly in the isolated fishing communities. Around 55,000 people live across 63 inhabited islands, often with limited access to healthcare services and education.
Our project aimed to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and reduce the prevalence rate in three phases. In Phase 1, we established peer education programs to directly inform young people about HIV prevention. In Phase 2, we implemented a communication strategy through local radio stations and billboards to reach individuals with low literacy levels. Phase 3 focused on distributing condoms, an often underestimated measure that plays a crucial role in risk reduction.
Phase One
Peer education in schools
Phase Two
Communication strategy (radio & billboards)
Phase Three
SUPPLY OF CONDOMS

Together with local healthcare centers, we have created sustainable changes for health and community life.
We aim to expand our impact by building additional partnerships, launching new social initiatives, and implementing innovative strategies to foster a healthier, more interconnected society.

Gynial
Since 2018, mothers have been producing their own sanitary pads and selling a portion of the production to generate funds for making more pads. Our partner, Gynial, has generously supported this project by donating funds to assist the women and providing free condoms for the clinic. Due to deeply ingrained traditional gender roles within social and family structures, female family members are often financially dependent on men. As a result, girls and women frequently suffer from infections due to using cloth rags, which keeps them from participating in public life, particularly from attending school during their periods. The initial funding and evaluation were conducted by Bbanga Project which was then directly handed over to the women of Kalangala, who independently manage the production, marketing, and sale of their pads. From the successful outdoor pad production in the first year, a dedicated project house was established the following year, named “Bakyala Tukole” (“Women, let’s work”) by the women involved.
